American Express Credit Cards

Although many people think of American Express (or Amex) as one of the most-established credit card providers, the firm’s first credit card was actually only launched in 1995. Before then, the company issued charge cards (without a credit facility).

American Express also provides its own loan, is a major financial planning firm and is one of the world’s largest travel agencies.

In the last 50 years, the firm has issued many different types of cards to cater for customers’ individual needs and circumstances. These include the Corporate Card (for business expenses), the Gold Card (for the ‘premium’ segment of the market) and the Platinum Card (for the frequent traveler).

One of American Express’ most famous features continues to be its cashback and reward schemes. Its Membership Rewards programme was launched in 1993, and since 2005, a partnership has existed between American Express and Nectar, the UK’s leading reward scheme.

On the downside, American Express credit cards are not accepted everywhere, so check before you run up a bill!
